Standard Equated Monthly Installment (EMI) Formula
Calculates monthly loan repayment installments and interest amortization using the standard mathematical reducing-balance formula used by all Indian banks.
Calculation Steps
- 1Convert annual interest rate to monthly rate: r = (Annual Rate / 12) / 100.
- 2Convert loan tenure in years to total months: n = Years * 12.
- 3Compute (1 + r)^n factor.
- 4Multiply by principal and evaluate numerator / denominator ratio to find monthly EMI.
- 5Compute Total Interest = (EMI * n) - Principal.
Practical Example
Scenario: Education or Home Loan of ₹20,00,000 at 9.5% interest for 10 years (120 months)
Inputs: Principal: ₹20,00,000 | Interest: 9.5% p.a. | Tenure: 10 Years (120 Months)
Calculation: r = 0.095/12 = 0.007917 | EMI = [2000000 * 0.007917 * (1.007917)^120] / [(1.007917)^120 - 1] = ₹25,873
Result: Monthly EMI: ₹25,873 | Total Interest: ₹11,04,749 | Total Repayment: ₹31,04,749
